What is the PSA blood test?

PSA stands for prostate specific antigen. This is a protein produced by the cells in your prostate gland. The blood test measures the amount of PSA in your blood. Thus it is normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood.

What do elevated levels of PSA mean?

As you get older your prostate gland enlarges and this will raise your PSA levels.

Elevated PSA levels could mean that you might have other problems with your prostate and this does not mean you have prostate cancer.

Common causes of elevated PSA include:

  1. An enlarged prostate
  2. Infection or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis)
  3. Prostate cancer
  4. Vigorous exercise
  5. Urine infection
  6. Ejaculation
  7. Anal sex and prostate stimulation

What are the risk factors for prostate cancer?

  • Your age (50+)
  • If you are Black (1 in 4 will get prostate cancer in their lifetime)
  • Family history (twice more likely if your father or brother has had it)

Benefits of having the PSA blood test:

  1. A minimally invasive test
  2. May pick up cancer before you have symptoms
  3. May pick up fast-growing cancer in its early stages

Limitations/Disadvantages of the PSA test:

  1. It does not always pick up the cancer, 1 in 7 men with a normal PSA level may have cancer; 1 in 50 men with normal levels may have a fast-growing cancer.
  2. If your levels are raised you may need further investigations which includes an MRI and a biopsy. A biopsy has side effects which include pain, bleeding and infection.
  3. If you are diagnosed with a slow-growing localised you might not need treatment but this can cause anxiety.
