How long does an offshore medical last?

Offshore medicals are a standard requirement for those who work on offshore facilities, with the most common examples being oil rigs and offshore windfarms. The medical certificate provided by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), formerly Oil and Gas UK, is accepted worldwide for working in offshore environments. This article provides information on how long an offshore medical certificate lasts, along with other important information around the appointments.

What does an offshore medical consist of?

The purpose of an offshore medical (OEUK Medical) is to thoroughly assess the fitness for offshore working for anyone in the oil and gas industry in the UK. It must be issued by a qualified healthcare practitioner during an official appointment. An OEUK medical will involve a number of tests, including:

  • Physical examination – physical data is recorded, such as height, weight, and body mass.
  • Eyesight test.
  • Hearing test.
  • Urine testing – necessary to assess the functionality of the kidneys and sometimes to check for drug use.
  • Spirometry (breathing test) – assess those with certain underlying conditions that could create risk in an offshore working environment.

How long does the offshore medical examination take?

Typically, an offshore medical should take no more than 30-45 minutes. Although this time can be longer depending on how long it takes for you to fill out the initial questionnaire, as well as any additional health screenings the company requires. The latter point is likely to change between employers, so it’s important to check for any special requirements before booking an appointment.

When does an offshore medical certificate need renewing?

The OEUK medical certificate is valid for two years, after which it must be renewed for the individual to return to work. However, employers and operators are free to request an examination during this time. This can lead to reasons for suspending or cancelling the certificate, including:

  • If there’s been a significant change in your fitness levels.
  • The healthcare professional who issued the certificate deems they did not have all the relevant information of the person’s condition when the examination took place.
  • You have not followed the terms laid out by the offshore medical certificate.

If your offshore medical expires during the course of a voyage at sea, you can continue to work for short period of time. This will typically be until the time that the boat next docks at a port. In these cases, the certificate can be extended for up to 3 months from its expiry date.
